History of the United Artists Building
Early Days as a Movie House
For many years, the United Artists Theatre Building was a popular place. Until December 29, 1971, it worked as a movie theater. It also had office spaces. The theater itself was designed in a Spanish-Gothic style. It could seat 2,070 people, which is a lot!
Life After Movies
After it stopped showing movies, the theater was used sometimes until 1973. From 1978 to 1983, it became a recording studio. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra used it to record their music. However, the office parts of the building had problems. Many businesses moved to the suburbs. Because of this, the entire building finally closed in 1984.
Changes Over Time
When it was first built, the building had a tall, 10-story sign that said "UA." In the 1950s, this sign was replaced. A new, smaller sign called a marquee was put up. This marquee stayed there until 2005. The United Artists Building also used to share its land with the Hotel Tuller. That hotel has since been taken down.
Preparing for the Super Bowl
In 2006, Detroit was getting ready for the NFL Super Bowl. To make the city look nice, some changes were made to the United Artists Building. All the graffiti (spray paint drawings) were cleaned off its windows. The lower parts of the building were painted black. This helped to hide any graffiti at the bottom. The old theater marquee was also removed at this time.
What's Happening Now
For a while, the building was empty. Then, in 2006, a company called Ilitch Holdings said they would try to sell it. This company often buys old buildings. They say they want to fix them up.
As of 2025, the historic United Artists Theatre Building is being restored. It is being turned into a large apartment building. This means people will soon be able to live inside this famous Detroit landmark.
