A Look at Its Past
The United Artists Theatre Building was once a busy place.
Movie Theater and Offices
From 1928 until 1971, the building was a popular movie theater and had office spaces. The theater itself was designed in a Spanish-Gothic style. It could seat 2,070 people.
After 1971, the theater was used only sometimes until 1973. From 1978 to 1983, it became a recording studio for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Office Block Struggles
When the theater closed, the office parts of the building started to have problems. Many businesses moved out to the suburbs. Because of this, the entire building finally closed in 1984.
Changing Signs
The building originally had a tall, 10-story sign that said "UA". In the 1950s, this sign was replaced with a different kind of sign called a marquee. This marquee stayed on the building until 2005.
Preparing for the Super Bowl
Before the Super Bowl XL football game in 2006, some changes were made to the building.
- Any drawings or writings on the windows (called graffiti) were cleaned off.
- The lower parts of the building were painted black to cover up graffiti near the ground.
- The old theater marquee was also taken down.
Future Plans
In 2006, a company called Ilitch Holdings announced they would try to sell the building. This company often buys old, historic buildings. They usually say they want to fix them up and make them new again.
As of 2023, the historic United Artists Theatre Building is being fixed up. It is being changed into a large apartment building where people will live.
