The United Carriage and Baggage Transfer Building is a very old and important building in Portland, Oregon. You can find it in the city's Old Town Chinatown neighborhood. This building was finished a long time ago, either in 1886 or possibly even 1875!

It's a special part of the Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District. This whole district was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Later, in 1977, it became a National Historic Landmark District. Today, the ground floor of this historic building is home to the popular Pine Street Market.

History of the United Carriage Building

This building has a long and interesting past. It was originally built for a company that helped people move their belongings. Imagine horse-drawn carriages carrying luggage and goods!

Becoming a Landmark

The city of Portland recognized the building's importance. In 1969, the city's Historic Landmarks Commission officially named it a Portland Historic Landmark. This means it's a protected building because of its history and unique look.

From Carriages to Food Market

Over the years, the building has been used for many different things. It was once the very first location for a popular restaurant called The Old Spaghetti Factory. Later, it even hosted a youth dance club known as Quest.

Today, the building has a new life as the Pine Street Market. This market is a lively place where you can find many different food vendors. It's a great example of how old buildings can be given new purposes while still keeping their historic charm.
