A general election is when people in a country vote to choose who will represent them in their government. The United Kingdom general election of 2001 happened on Thursday, 7 June 2001. During this election, people voted for 659 Members of Parliament (MPs) to join the British House of Commons. MPs are like representatives who speak for the people in their local area.
Election Results: Who Won?
The media called this election "the quiet landslide." This is because the Labour Party won by a huge amount again, just like in the previous election. They only lost 5 seats, which is a very small number compared to how many they won.
However, fewer people voted in this election. Only 59.4% of people who could vote actually did, compared to 71.3% in the election before. Even with fewer voters, Tony Blair, the leader of the Labour Party, became the first Labour Prime Minister to serve a second full term in office.
