UK and Uruguay: A Long Friendship
How Their Friendship Began
The United Kingdom and Uruguay became friends right after Uruguay became an independent country in 1825. This means they started talking and working together officially. A very important step for Uruguay to become its own country was a special agreement called the Preliminary Peace Convention in 1828. This agreement was helped by British diplomats, who are like official representatives from the UK.
For many years, the UK played a big part in Uruguay's history. This continued until the end of World War II. After the war, the United States started to have a bigger role in helping Uruguay.
Modern Day Talks
In 2022, the leader of the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, invited Uruguay's President, Luis Lacalle Pou, to a meeting. They met on May 23 at Downing Street, which is where the UK Prime Minister lives and works.
During their meeting, they talked about several important topics. They discussed how to make trade between their countries even stronger. They also looked at ways to remove things that make it harder for them to trade. Another key topic was Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which is against international rules. They also talked about how their countries could work together on security matters.
