United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine facts for kids
The United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine was a big idea from 1947. It was a plan to divide a land called Mandatory Palestine into two new countries. This land was once controlled by Britain.
The plan suggested splitting the land into six main parts. Three parts would be for Palestinians and three for Israelis. The important city of Jerusalem would be a special international city. It would be shared by everyone.
The Israelis agreed to this plan. But the Palestinians did not accept it. Because of this, the plan was never put into action. This disagreement led to the 1947-1949 Palestine War.

Why Was This Plan Made?
After World War II, the United Kingdom decided to stop controlling Mandatory Palestine. This area had been under British rule since 1920. The United Nations (UN) was a new organization. Its job was to help countries work together for peace.
The UN was asked to decide what should happen to Palestine. Many Jewish people wanted to create their own country there. Many Arab people, who were already living there, also wanted their own country. The UN needed to find a way for both groups to live peacefully.
What the Plan Proposed
The UN plan was officially called United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 (II). It was voted on by the UN General Assembly on November 29, 1947. The plan suggested creating:
- An independent Arab State
- An independent Jewish State
- A special international area for Jerusalem
The plan tried to give each group enough land. It also tried to connect the different parts of each proposed country.
What Happened Next?
The Jewish leaders accepted the UN plan. They saw it as a chance to create their own country. However, Arab leaders and Palestinians living in the area rejected the plan. They felt it was unfair to divide their land. They also believed it gave too much land to the Jewish state.
Because the plan was not accepted by both sides, it never happened. Instead, fighting broke out. This led to the 1947-1949 Palestine War. This war changed the map of the region. It also created many new challenges for both Israelis and Palestinians.
