The United States Department of the Navy was created by the United States Congress on April 30, 1798. It was made to give civilian leaders and managers control over the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps.

The Department of the Navy handles many important tasks. These include finding new people to join (recruitment), training them, and organizing the Navy and Marine Corps. It also takes care of building ships and other structures. Even though both the Navy and Marine Corps are part of this department, they are two separate parts of the military.
