The United States Post Office building in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is also known as the "Old" Federal Building. It's a very important building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized for its historical value.

The building was constructed between 1912 and 1915. For many years, it served as the main post office for Minneapolis. People would go there to send and receive their mail. In 1936, a new post office was built. After that, the Old Federal Building became home to various offices for the United States government.

A Building with History

This grand building was designed by architect James Knox Taylor. It features Neoclassical architecture, which means it has a classic, formal style. Think of ancient Greek and Roman buildings with big columns and impressive designs.

A Place for Public Voices

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Old Federal Building became a place where people gathered to express their opinions. At that time, an office called the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station was located there. This office was involved in military service.

Many people in the United States had strong feelings about the Vietnam War. They wanted to share their views peacefully. On April 3, 1968, students and others marched from the University of Minnesota to the Old Federal Building. They were part of a nationwide protest called the Day of Resistance.

More peaceful gatherings continued over the next few years. On August 17, 1970, an unexpected event caused significant damage to the building. An explosion occurred near the Second Street entrance. This event caused about $500,000 worth of damage. It also broke windows in buildings several blocks away. A security guard was injured during the incident.

A Recognized Landmark

Because of its important history and beautiful architecture, the Old Federal Building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This listing helps protect the building and recognizes its significance to the community and the nation.
