The US Post Office-Greenfield Main is an old and important building. It is a post office located at 442 Main Street in Greenfield, Massachusetts. This building was first built in 1915 and made bigger in 1939. It shows off styles called Beaux Arts and Classical Revival.

In 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special place worth protecting. Later, in 1988, it became part of the Main Street Historic District.

About the Building

Greenfield's main post office stands in an important spot. It is in downtown Greenfield, across from the Franklin County Courthouse. The building has a two-story main part. It also has two single-story wings, one on each side. These wings look almost exactly the same.

Building Design and Features

Wide steps lead up to the main entrance. On each side of the steps, you can see old light fixtures. These lights are on iron stands. The building has simple decorations from the Colonial Revival style. It has tall columns called pilasters around a curved entrance. This entrance has fancy details.

The windows are tall and slide up and down. They are set in slightly curved spaces. Inside the lobby, the floor is made of shiny marble. The lower part of the walls is granite. The wood parts are stained. A bronze sculpture stands in the lobby. It was put there in 1941. A famous artist named Hélène Sardeau created it.

History of the Post Office

The central, two-story part of the building was built in 1915. It was designed by Oscar Wenderoth. He was in charge of designs for the U.S. Treasury Department at that time.

In 1939, the building was made larger. The single-story wings on each side were added then. This post office is one of the most beautiful buildings in Greenfield.
