The United Way Community Services Building is a tall office building in downtown Detroit, Michigan. It is located at 1212 Griswold Street. This building was finished in 1895. It stands about 49 meters (160 feet) tall and has 12 stories.
Architects Spier & Rohns designed the building. When it was first built, it was the tallest building in Michigan! The bottom two floors are made of rough brown stone. The main entrance is in the middle of the front. It has four square pillars made of gray granite. Floors three to five use smooth stone. Floors six to twelve are made of tan brick.
The building used to have a fancy edge around the top, called a cornice. This was removed in the 1950s. In 1988, a space inside the building was filled in. This added more office space.
A Look at the Building's Past
This building has had a few different owners and names. From 1987 to 2009, the United Way for Southeastern Michigan owned and used it. The city's redevelopment agency then bought it from them.
Before 1987, it was known as the Detroit Savings Bank Building. It held offices for the Detroit Savings Bank. This bank later became Detroit Bank and Trust, and then Comerica.
When it was first built, it was called the Chamber of Commerce Building. At 12 stories tall, it is Detroit's oldest skyscraper still standing. It was one of the first buildings in the city to use a steel frame. The 10-story Hammond Building, built in 1889, was Detroit's very first skyscraper. It is no longer there. Today, The Qube stands where the Hammond Building used to be.
In 2013, the Archdiocese of Detroit announced plans. They wanted to bring their offices from different places into this building. They moved into the lower six floors in early 2015. The upper floors became homes. As part of the updates, a new cornice was added to the top. This made it look more like it did when it was first built. The plan is also to bring back the name Detroit Savings Bank Building.
