Unity, Kentucky is a small place that used to be a busy coal mining community. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of a larger county, not a separate town. Unity is located in eastern Kentucky, just two miles west of a larger town called Catlettsburg.

Exploring Unity, Kentucky
Where is Unity Located?
Unity is found in Boyd County, in the eastern part of Kentucky. A road called Kentucky Route 168 goes right through this small area. A stream named Catletts Creek also flows through Unity. This creek eventually joins the Ohio River.
A Look Back: Coal Mining Days
Long ago, Unity was a place where people worked in coal mines. Coal mining was a very important industry in Kentucky. It provided jobs and helped power homes and factories. Many families lived in Unity because of these mining jobs.
Schools and Community Life
For many years, children in Unity went to a local school. It was first called Catletts Creek School. Later, its name changed to Eidson Elementary. This school served the community from 1962 until 1993. After 1993, all the students from Eidson Elementary started going to Catlettsburg Elementary. This meant that the local school in Unity closed down.
Unity Today
Today, Unity is a very quiet place. It's almost as if it doesn't exist as a separate community anymore. Most people who live there think of Catlettsburg as their home. This is because they use Catlettsburg's postal zip code for their mail. So, even though it has a name, Unity is now mostly just a part of the larger Catlettsburg area.
