What the UCDC Does
The University Child Development Center helps families connected to the University of Pittsburgh. It offers child care and early education for children. These children range in age from six weeks old up to six years old. This includes kids whose parents are teachers, staff, or students at the university.
Learning for University Students
The UCDC is also a learning place for university students. Students from Pitt and other schools can come here. They get to watch and work with young children in classrooms. This helps them learn how to teach and care for kids. The center also shares ideas and help with other programs. This helps young children in Pittsburgh and other areas.
Inside the Center
The UCDC building has many different classrooms. There are four rooms for babies (infants). There are also four rooms for toddlers. For older kids, there are two rooms for three-year-olds. And two more rooms are for children aged four to six. Each room is made to be just right for the age group using it.
The center also has two big indoor play areas. One is for babies and toddlers. The other is for preschool children. Outside, there is a fun playground for kids to play on.
History of the Building
The building where the UCDC is now has an interesting past. It was built a long time ago, between 1904 and 1905.
First Church of Christ, Scientist
The building was first a church. It was called the First Church of Christ, Scientist. A famous architect named Solon Spencer Beman designed it. He was from Chicago. The building was made in a style called Classical Revival. This style looks like old Greek and Roman buildings. In 1977, it was named a local historic landmark. This means it's an important old building.
In 1992, the church building was sold to the University of Pittsburgh. The First Church of Christ, Scientist then moved to a new location.
UCDC Opens Its Doors
After buying the building, the University of Pittsburgh spent money to make it ready. They renovated it to create the UCDC. The UCDC officially opened in this new building on May 30, 1995. Before that, it was in a different university building called Bellefield Hall. In 2005, the city of Pittsburgh decided the old church building was important enough to be considered for a national list of historic places.
