Shadyside is a lively neighborhood located in the eastern part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It's known for its tree-lined streets, which is how it got its name from a 19th-century train station called "Shadyside."
This area is home to important places like UPMC Shadyside hospital, which is part of a big medical center. You can also find Chatham University nearby, a college that sits just outside Shadyside's southern border in Squirrel Hill. The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts is also located within Mellon Park, close to Shadyside.

Shopping and Fun in Shadyside
Shadyside has many cool stores and unique shops. The businesses are mainly found along three main streets: Walnut Street, Ellsworth Avenue, and S. Highland Avenue. These three areas are all close enough to walk to, making it easy to explore.
Walnut Street Shops
Walnut Street is a popular shopping area with both well-known national stores and local businesses. A famous spot here is Pamela's Diner. In 2009, then-President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama even ate breakfast there with 80 veterans!
During the summer, Walnut Street hosts "The Jam on Walnut," a concert series featuring local bands. These concerts happen on the last Saturday of each summer month. Money from drink sales at these events helps support Cystic Fibrosis research. Walnut Street also holds the "Art Festival on Walnut Street," where artists show and sell their work.
Ellsworth Avenue Finds
Ellsworth Avenue has many smaller, local shops. You can find places selling vintage clothes, art galleries, and beauty salons. There are also several restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat.
South Highland Avenue Style
S. Highland Avenue is home to fancy design and furniture stores, along with local restaurants and cafes. You can also find the entrance to the Eastside retail complex here, which has even more food options.
Living in Shadyside
Since the 1920s, Shadyside has been a home for many different kinds of people. You'll find families, young professionals, artists, musicians, and students living here. The neighborhood has a mix of beautiful old Victorian mansions and newer apartments and condos.
Because the neighborhood is set up in a compact way, most houses don't have their own garages. But it's easy to get around using the Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus system. There are also special express bus stops on Negley Avenue and Ellsworth Avenue.
Schools in Shadyside
The Shadyside area has both public and private schools. These include The Liberty School, Winchester Thurston School, The Ellis School, and Shadyside Academy.
The Liberty School
The Liberty School is a public school in Shadyside for students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Its colors are navy and white, and its mascot is the soaring eagle. The school was first built in 1872. In the 1990s, playgrounds were added for students to enjoy.
Liberty is a "magnet school," which means it's a public school that offers special courses. This helps it attract a wide variety of students. About 375 students attend Liberty each year, with about 16 students for every teacher.
Other Local Schools
- The Winchester Thurston School is a private school for both boys and girls. It has two campuses: one in Allison Park and the main city campus in Shadyside.
- The Ellis School is a private school just for girls, from age three through twelfth grade. It was started in 1916 by Sara Frazer Ellis.
Both The Ellis School and the Winchester Thurston School are part of the Pittsburgh Consortium of Independent Schools (PCIS). This group includes these and eleven other private schools in the area.
Shady Side Academy was founded in Shadyside in 1883. However, it's no longer located in the neighborhood. The school moved its older student campuses to Fox Chapel in the 1920s. Its youngest student campus is still in the city, in nearby Point Breeze.
Shadyside Action Coalition
The Shadyside Action Coalition, often called SAC, is a group that helps the community. This non-profit organization started in 1973. Their main goals are to "preserve values and laws of this community." They focus on things like keeping the neighborhood safe, planning for the future, parking, and making sure the community keeps its special character.
Shadyside's History
Shadyside got its name from a local farm many years ago. It officially became part of Pittsburgh in 1868.
