How Barishal University Started
People in the area first asked for a university way back in 1960. This was even before Bangladesh became independent. Other leaders, like President Ziaur Rahman and former president Abdur Rahman Biswas, also supported the idea.
After many years, the plan for the university was approved in 2008. The law for the University of Barishal was passed in 2010. On February 22, 2011, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina started the building work. The university officially opened in July 2011 at a temporary campus. Classes began on January 24, 2012.
