The University of Barishal (in Bengali: বরিশাল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়), also known as BU, is a public university in Barisal, a city in southern Bangladesh. This means it is funded by the government, making education more affordable for students. It was the 33rd public university to be created in the country.
The university was founded in 2011. Classes began on January 24, 2012, with six subjects for students to study. Today, it has grown much larger, with 25 different subjects, called departments, organized into six main groups called faculties. Each year, about 1,500 new students join the university to earn their first degree, known as an undergraduate degree. The university also offers advanced degrees called postgraduate degrees.
When it first opened, the university used a local school as a temporary home. It later moved to its own large, permanent campus.

History of the University
For many years, the people of Barisal dreamed of having their own university. The idea was first discussed as far back as 1960. Over the years, several leaders, including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman, expressed their wish to build a university in the city.
After decades of waiting, the plan was finally approved in 2008. On February 22, 2011, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially started the construction of the university.
The first classes began in 2012 with about 400 students. They studied six subjects: English, Management, Marketing, Economics, Mathematics, and Sociology. Since then, the university has grown to become an important center for education in southern Bangladesh.
