A Look at History
The idea for a university in Colombia's Caribbean area started in 1826. General Francisco de Paula Santander made a rule that allowed it to happen. Cartagena was chosen as the perfect city for it.
On October 6, 1827, a very important leader named Simon Bolivar officially started the university. It was first called the University of Magdalena and the Isthmus. This was because Panama was part of Colombia back then. Later, as things changed in the country, it became the University of Cartagena. It was located in a building called the Cloister of St. Augustine. At first, it only taught two main subjects: Law and Medicine.
In the 1950s, the university officially started using its current shield, which is like its special symbol. Later, in 1989, a new campus for health studies was opened. This is where students studying Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy moved. More new campuses were opened in the early 2000s for Science, Engineering, and Economics.
The university also started offering distance learning in 1993. This means students can study from different towns without having to come to Cartagena every day.
