A Look Back in Time: The University's History
The idea for a university in the Caribbean part of Colombia started in 1826. General Francisco de Paula Santander made a rule that allowed it to be created. The city of Cartagena was chosen as its home.
On October 6, 1827, a very important leader, Simon Bolivar, officially started the university. It was first called the University of Magdalena and the Isthmus because Panama was part of Colombia back then. Later, as things changed in the country, it became the University of Cartagena. At first, it only taught two main subjects: Law and Medicine.
In the 1950s, the university officially started using its current shield, which is like its special symbol. Over the years, the university grew. In 1989, a new Health Campus was opened. This is where students studying Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry moved. Later, in 2001, the Science and Engineering subjects moved to the Stone Bolivar Campus. The Economics subjects joined them there in 2003.
The university also made it possible for students to learn from a distance starting in 1993. This means students in different towns could still get an education from UniCartagena.
