The University of Kashmir (UoK), often called Kashmir University (KU), is a large public university. It is located next to the beautiful Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. This university was started in 1948.
The main campus has three parts: Hazratbal Campus, Naseem Bagh Campus, and Mirza Bagh Campus. The university offers many different study programs. These include courses in arts, business, education, law, and various sciences. It also has programs in medicine, engineering, and fine arts. The university has received a high rating of "A+" from NAAC. In 2023, it was ranked 33rd among universities in India by NIRF.

History of Kashmir University
The University of Kashmir began as part of the Jammu and Kashmir University in 1948. Many smart people helped build this university. Its former students are now famous around the world. In 1969, the university split into two separate universities. One became the University of Kashmir in Srinagar. The other became the University of Jammu in Jammu.
The University of Kashmir is mainly located in Hazratbal. It covers three areas: Amar Singh Bagh, Naseem Bagh, and Mirza Bagh. This campus is very large, spreading over 263 acres. It has the most full-time students in Jammu and Kashmir.
Most of Amar Singh Bagh and Naseem Bagh form the Hazratbal campus. This part is on the northeastern side of Dal Lake. Many study departments and research centers used to be in Naseem Bagh. But the university decided to make Naseem Bagh a special heritage site. So, many departments moved to other parts of the Hazratbal campus. A new campus, Zakura Campus, is being built nearby. It will help the university grow even more. Mirza Bagh has buildings for university staff to live in.
New campuses were planned in Ananthnag and Baramulla in 2002. Money was raised to build these new campuses. The South Campus in Anantnag started in 2008. The North Campus in Baramulla began in 2009. Three more campuses are also being built in Kupwara, Kargil, and Leh.
What the University Offers Today
The university has 12 main study areas called faculties. It also has 47 academic departments and 21 special centers. There are 36 colleges and 6 private institutes connected to the university. The two biggest departments are the Faculty of Law and the Business School.
Law and Business Studies
The Faculty of Law is one of the oldest departments. It offers different law courses. Students in the "Law Society" often hold debates and competitions. The faculty also publishes a research journal.
The Business School is now called the Department of Management Studies. This change happened in 2019. It offers more courses now, not just business.
Other Study Areas
The Media Education Research Centre (MERC) teaches mass communication and journalism. In 2014, the university opened its own engineering college. It is called the Institute of Technology. This college is at the new Zakura Campus. It offers four-year engineering courses. These include Mechanical, Electronics, and Electrical Engineering.
University Campus Life
The main university campus is 247 acres in Hazratbal. To help more students get an education, the university has satellite campuses. These are in Anantnag (South Campus), Zakura Campus (Institute of Technology), and Baramulla (North Campus). Three more campuses are being set up in Kupwara, Kargil, and Leh.
University Library
The university has a main library called Allama Iqbal Library. It holds over 600,000 books. It also has 415 rare old manuscripts. This library helps students and researchers with their studies. When the university split in 1969, the library's collection was shared.
Student Hostels
The university offers places to live for its staff and students. These are given on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Gani Kashmiri Hostel is for students doing advanced research.
- Habba Khatoon Girls Hostel is for female students.
- Mehboob-ul-Aalam Hostel is for male postgraduate students.
- Shiekh-ul-Aalam Hostel is for male students.
- Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri Hostel is also for male students.

Study Programs and Support
The University of Kashmir offers 107 different courses. These are across 11 main areas of study. Students can take courses for their first degree (undergraduate), advanced degrees (postgraduate), or highest degrees (doctoral).
Types of Courses
For undergraduate studies, the university offers three-year courses. These include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, and Bachelor of Science. There are also four-year Bachelor of Technology courses. Some students can take a five-year combined Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law course.
For postgraduate studies, there are two-year courses. These include Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Computer Applications. These courses are offered by different departments and faculties.
Scholarships for Students
The university offers two types of merit scholarships. These are given to the top two students who do very well. If you get a scholarship in your first year, it's based on your entrance test score. In later years, it's based on your exam results. The scholarship helps cover costs for up to 12 months.
There are also research scholarships. Each department offers six scholarships for students doing PhD or M.Phil. degrees. These scholarships give students Rs 10,000 per month for up to three years. They also get money for other expenses.
Help for Students in Need
The university has a "Student Aid Fund." This fund gives money to students who need financial help. It especially helps smart students from families with low incomes. The Kashmir University Alumni Association also helps students who have financial difficulties. They often give special help to students who are orphans.

Universities are often ranked to show how good they are. The University of Kashmir is well-regarded both in India and internationally.
In Asia, the university was ranked between 451st and 500th in 2023. This ranking comes from the QS World University Rankings. In India, the same QS rankings placed it between 56th and 60th. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked it 58th overall in India. It was also ranked 33rd among all universities in India in 2023.
Sports and Activities
The university has a special department for sports. It was started in 1948. Its goal is to encourage sports among young people. This helps students grow in many ways. The university has hosted many sports events for other universities. These include water sports like water skiing and kayaking.
Students from the university have also done well in international winter sports. Adventure sports like mountaineering and trekking are also offered. The university organizes training camps for students.
The main campus has many sports facilities. These include fields for cricket, hockey, and football. There are also courts for volleyball, handball, baseball, tennis, and basketball. The campus also has gyms for students to stay fit.
