What is the University of Valparaíso?
The University of Valparaíso is a place where students go to learn after high school. It is a "state public university," which means it is supported by the government of Chile. Many students attend UV to study different subjects.
Where is UV Located?
Most of UV's campuses are in the city of Valparaíso. This city is a major port on the Pacific Ocean. Valparaíso was a very important business center in the 1800s. UV also has campuses in other parts of the Valparaíso Region and in Santiago, the capital city of Chile.
A Look at UV's History
The University of Valparaíso has a rich history that goes back many years. It started with law studies in the late 1800s.
Early Beginnings of Education
Formal studies in law began in Valparaíso in 1878. By 1911, this had grown into Chile's first regional School of Law. This school was part of the national University of Chile (UCH). The University of Chile itself has roots going back to 1622.
Becoming an Independent University
In 1972, public university education in Valparaíso was organized as a branch of the University of Chile. On February 12, 1981, the University of Valparaíso became its own independent university. This change was part of a bigger plan to create more public universities in different regions of Chile.
UV Today: A Hub for Learning
Today, UV is an important part of the higher education system in Chile. It is one of many universities that work together.
Part of a Bigger Group
UV is one of sixteen universities that are part of the Consortium of Universities of the State of Chile. These universities became independent from the main national universities. UV is also one of 25 universities in Chile's Council of University Rectors (called "CRUCH"). These are often known as "traditional" universities.
Valparaíso: A College Town
Valparaíso is known as Chile's "college town" because higher education is a big part of its economy. Besides UV, three other traditional universities are based there: Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), and "Universidad de Playa Ancha" (UPLA).
UV's different schools and departments are spread out across the central part of Valparaíso. They form a university area between the main UPLA campus and the main PUCV building.
Who Leads the University?
Since January 2021, the leader of the University of Valparaíso has been Osvaldo Corrales. He is known as the rector of the university.
