Uptown Christiansburg is a popular shopping mall in Christiansburg, Virginia. It used to be called New River Valley Mall. This mall has many stores and places to eat. Some of its main stores are Kohl's, Belk, Homegoods, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Mall History: How It Started

The mall first opened its doors in 1988. A company called Crown American built it. When it first opened, the mall had big stores like Hess's, J. C. Penney, Sears, and Leggett. Leggett is now known as Belk.

Changes in the 1990s

For many years, the mall had some empty stores. About three-quarters of its shops were open in the 1990s. To help with this, a company named PREIT bought the mall. They started making big changes and updates in the 2000s.

Mall Makeovers and New Stores

As part of the updates, the Belk store became much bigger. A new Dick's Sporting Goods store also opened. It took the place of an older store called Peebles. An old movie theater in the mall was also changed. It became a food court where people could eat. Part of it also became a small campus for New River Community College.

Recent Changes and New Owners

In 2014, the Sears store closed down. A year later, Kohl's opened in its place. In 2016, a company called Farallon Capital Management bought the mall. They hired another company, CBL & Associates Properties, to manage it.

When J. C. Penney closed its store in 2017, that large space was updated. It made room for new shops like Ulta, Homegoods, and Kirklands. In 2018, Planet Fitness announced it would open a gym in the Kohl's part of the mall. In 2019, RockStep Capital bought the mall for about $21.6 million. The mall got its new name, Uptown Christiansburg, in July 2020.
