Urias Africanus McGill (born around 1823 – died 1866) was an African-American businessman. He moved with his family from the United States to Liberia in the 1800s. Urias was part of the well-known McGill family in Liberia. He and his brothers started a very successful trading company in Monrovia.
Urias McGill's Early Life
Urias McGill was born free in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were George R. and Angelina McGill. Being "born free" meant he was not a slave.
When Urias was eight years old, his family made a big move. They traveled across the ocean to Liberia. They sailed on a ship called the Reaper.
Moving to Liberia
The McGill family arrived in Monrovia, Liberia, in February 1831. Sadly, Urias's mother passed away soon after they got there. This was a difficult start in their new home.
Starting a Business
In 1854, Urias McGill and his three brothers decided to work together. They created their own trading company. They named it McGill Brothers.
This company became very successful. It helped the McGill family become well-known in Liberia. They played an important part in the country's business world.
