Urpish (from the Quechua language) is an amazing ancient place in Peru. It's an archaeological site, which means it's a spot where people in the past lived or built things. Scientists study these sites to learn about history. Urpish is located high up in the mountains, about 3,474 meters (11,398 feet) above sea level. It's in the Huánuco Region, in a part of Peru called the Andes mountains. Specifically, you can find it in the Huamalíes Province, in the Jircan District.

Exploring the Ancient Site of Urpish
This ancient site is found above a small village also called Urpish. The people who lived here a long time ago built some really interesting structures.
What Urpish Looks Like
At Urpish, you can see rectangular buildings made from stone. These structures are quite tall, reaching between 6 meters (20 feet) and 8 meters (26 feet) high. The entire site is protected by a very tall wall. This wall is about 8 meters (26 feet) to 10 meters (33 feet) high. It likely helped keep the people living inside safe.
Mysterious Stone Art: Petroglyphs
Some of the stone walls at Urpish have special drawings on them. These drawings are called petroglyphs. Petroglyphs are images carved into rock. At Urpish, you can see cool spiral shapes and even human faces carved into the stones. These carvings give us clues about the art and beliefs of the ancient people who lived there.
