Urwin's Store is an old and important building. You can find it on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia. It is so special that it is listed on the Australian Heritage Database. This means it is protected because of its history.
Building History
This building was built in 1898 by Henry Davey Jnr. It has two floors. The top part of the building has fancy decorations like scrolls and pointed shapes called finials. It is made of brick with a smooth finish, has a metal roof, and wooden windows.
The ground floor has always been a shop. It still looks a lot like it did when it was first built. The shop was first called Urwin's Drapery Store. A drapery store sells fabric and clothing. Later, it was known as Caddy & Wilshire's Drapery Store. The top floor now has a balcony or verandah that hangs over the street below.
A Name Mix-Up
If you look closely at the front of the building, you might see the name "Unwins Store" written there. But the building was actually built for Robert Urwin. This means the name on the front is spelled incorrectly. The correct name for the building is Urwin's Store, with an 'r'.
Upstairs Tenants
For many years, the upstairs rooms were rented out.
- From 1899, the Toodyay Masonic Lodge used these rooms for their meetings. They stayed there until 1924.
- Another group, The Order of the Buffaloes, also held their meetings here. They used the rooms until the 1950s.
Next Door Neighbors
The year after Urwin's Store was built, another shop was added right next to it. This new shop filled the space between Urwin's Store and the Freemasons Hotel. This building was also built by Henry Davey Jnr. A man named Carl Heiden ran a hairdresser and tobacconist's shop there.
Today, a retail bakery and café operates from Urwin's Store. You can go there to buy fresh bread and enjoy a drink.
