Uta Caecilia Merzbach (born February 9, 1933 – died June 27, 2017) was a German-American historian. She studied the history of mathematics. She became the first person to collect and care for mathematical instruments at the Smithsonian Institution.

Early Life and Moving to America

Uta Merzbach was born in Berlin, Germany. Her mother was a philologist, someone who studies languages. Her father was an economist. During World War II, her family faced difficult times. In 1943, they were sent to a place called Theresienstadt concentration camp.

Luckily, the Merzbach family survived the war and the camp. After the war, they lived in a refugee camp for a year. In 1946, they moved to Georgetown, Texas in the United States. Her father found a job teaching at Southwestern University.

Uta Merzbach's Education

After finishing high school in Brownwood, Texas, Uta started college at Southwestern University. After two years, she transferred to the University of Texas at Austin. In 1952, she earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics. Two years later, in 1954, she also earned her master's degree in mathematics from the same university.

Uta worked as a school teacher for a short time. However, she soon decided to go back to school. She continued her studies at Harvard University. In 1965, she earned her Ph.D. from Harvard. Her main study was about the history of science and mathematics. Her special project was about how modern ideas in algebra developed over time.

Working at the Smithsonian

In 1964, Uta Merzbach started working at the National Museum of American History. This museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution. She began as an associate curator and later became a full curator. A curator is someone who takes care of a museum's collections.

Uta's job was to collect and preserve mathematical objects. She also collected interviews with people who were important in the early days of computers. She worked at the Smithsonian until 1988.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1991, Uta Merzbach helped write a new edition of an important book. The book was called A History of Mathematics. It was first written by Carl Benjamin Boyer in 1968.

After she retired, Uta moved back to Georgetown, Texas. She passed away in 2017. Her work helped us understand more about the history of mathematics and computing.
