Uzodinma Iweala (born November 5, 1982) is a Nigerian-American writer and medical doctor. He is known for his powerful stories. His first novel, Beasts of No Nation, was published in 2005. This book tells the story of a child soldier in an unnamed African country. It was later made into an award-winning film in 2015. Many famous magazines and newspapers, like Time Magazine and The New York Times, talked about the book.

In 2012, Uzodinma Iweala released a non-fiction book called Our Kind of People. This book explored a serious health challenge in Nigeria. He also wrote another novel, Speak No Evil, which came out in 2018. This book focuses on the life of a Nigerian-American teenager named Niru.

Iweala used to be the CEO of The Africa Center in Harlem, New York. He is currently a special researcher at the Katë Hamburger Center at the University of Heidelberg. He also works as an advisor for UNESCO, a part of the United Nations.

Early Life and Education

Uzodinma Iweala was born and grew up in the United States. He is the son of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a well-known leader.

He went to St. Albans School in Washington, D.C.. After that, he studied at Harvard College, where he earned a degree in English and American Literature and Language in 2004. While at Harvard, he received several awards for his writing, including the Hoopes Prize and the Eager Prize.

In 2011, he graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons as a medical doctor. He also spent time as a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.

His Novels

Beasts of No Nation (2005)

This was Uzodinma Iweala's first novel. It tells the story of a young boy who becomes a child soldier. The book shows the difficult experiences of children caught in conflict. It was praised for its strong storytelling and important message.

Speak No Evil (2018)

In his second novel, Iweala explores the life of Niru, a Nigerian-American high school student living near Washington, D.C. The story looks at how Niru deals with being a Black person in America and the child of Nigerian immigrants. The book also touches on themes like family, culture, and finding your place in the world. It shows Niru's journey as he tries to understand his own identity and navigate different parts of his life.

Awards and Recognition

Uzodinma Iweala has received several awards for his writing.

  • In 2006, he won the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award. This award recognizes talented young writers.
  • In 2007, Granta magazine named him one of the "20 Best Young American Novelists." This is a special honor given to promising new writers.
