About Válor

Válor is a charming town located in the beautiful region of Granada, Spain. It sits among mountains, which makes for amazing views. The town has a rich history and unique traditions.

The Moors and Christians Festival

Válor is famous for its yearly festival. This event takes place on September 15th. It celebrates the town's patron saint, the Holy Christ of the Ivy.

The main part of the festival is a special play. It's called the Moors and Christians performance. This play re-enacts an old revolt by the Moriscos. Moriscos were Muslims who were forced to convert to Christianity.

The play happens in the main square. It's right next to the Church building. Actors play important roles like kings, generals, and ambassadors. They even ride horses! There are also foot soldiers who use shotguns and rifles. They fire blanks, so it's safe. The script for this play was written in the 1860s. A poet from Granada, Enriqueta Lozano, wrote it.

Válor's History

Life in Válor long ago was described by a writer named Gerald Brenan. He lived nearby in the 1920s. Like other towns in the area, Válor saw some disagreements. Different groups of people had different ideas about how things should be run.

During the Spanish Civil War, Válor experienced changes. It was first controlled by one side. Then, it was taken by soldiers from the coast. The town stayed in the Republican zone until the war ended. After the war, many people connected to the losing side had to leave the area.

Life and Economy

Until the 1970s, Válor's economy was mostly farming. People grew cereals, olives, and grapes. The land was mountainous, making farming hard.

Many farm workers had to travel. They would go to the plains of Andalusia. This was for seasonal work during harvest time. This helped them earn money for their families.
