Víctor García de la Concha was born on January 2, 1934, in Villaviciosa, a town in Asturias, Spain. He is a famous Spanish scholar who studies language and literature, a field called philology. He used to be the director of two very important Spanish language organizations: the Cervantes Institute and the Royal Spanish Academy. He led the Royal Spanish Academy for three terms, from 1998 to 2010, which was longer than most directors serve.

A Life of Learning and Leadership

Víctor García de la Concha loved learning from a young age. He studied philosophy at the University of Oviedo and theology in Rome. After finishing his studies, he became a teacher. He taught at several universities, including the University of Valladolid, University of Murcia, and University of Zaragoza. Eventually, he became a professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Salamanca.

From Professor to TV Writer

Besides teaching, Mr. García de la Concha also worked on a TV show! He was one of the writers for a TV mini-series called Teresa de Jesús in 1984. He even had a small acting part, called a cameo role, in one episode. He played the Archbishop of Seville in the show. In 1987, he started managing a literary magazine called Ínsula.

Leading the Spanish Language

In 1992, Víctor García de la Concha became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. This academy is very important because it helps protect and guide the Spanish language. He quickly moved up, becoming the Secretary in 1993 and then the Director in 1998.

During his time as director, he received many honors. In 2000, he was given an honorary degree from a university in Honduras. He also received the Lázaro Carreter Prize in 2009. In 2010, King Juan Carlos I of Spain gave him a very special award called the Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

After leading the Royal Spanish Academy for many years, he became the director of the Cervantes Institute in 2012. This institute helps spread Spanish language and culture around the world.
