Víctor García de la Concha was born on January 2, 1934, in Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain. He is a Spanish philologist, which means he is an expert in language and literature. He used to be the director of two very important Spanish language organizations: the Cervantes Institute and the Royal Spanish Academy. He led the Royal Spanish Academy for three terms, from 1998 to 2010. This was special because directors usually serve only two terms.

About Víctor García de la Concha's Life
Víctor García de la Concha studied philosophy at the University of Oviedo. He also studied theology in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University. After finishing his studies, he became a teacher.
His Teaching Career
He taught at several universities in Spain. These included the University of Valladolid, University of Murcia, and University of Zaragoza. Later, he became a professor of Spanish Literature at the famous University of Salamanca.
Working in Television
In 1984, Víctor García de la Concha helped write a TV show. It was a short series called Teresa de Jesús. He even appeared briefly in one episode! He played the Archbishop of Seville, who blessed the main character, Teresa. Some of his university friends held a special canopy over them during the scene. In 1987, he started managing a literary magazine called Ínsula.
Joining the Royal Spanish Academy
In 1992, he became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. This is a very important group that protects and promotes the Spanish language. He took a special seat known as c. The next year, he became the Secretary of the Academy. Then, in 1998, he was chosen to be its Director.
In 2000, he received an honorary degree. This is called a Doctor Honoris Causa in Letters. He got it from Francisco Morazán National Pedagogic University in Honduras. This happened when he visited the Academia Hondureña de la Lengua.
Awards and Honors
Víctor García de la Concha has received many important awards. In 2009, he won the Lázaro Carreter Prize. In 2010, the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, gave him a very high honor. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
In 2011, he received the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize. This award recognizes people who have done great work in Spanish and Portuguese culture. In January 2012, he was named the director of the Cervantes Institute. This institute helps spread Spanish language and culture around the world.
