Víctor Manzanilla Schaffer (born November 13, 1924 – died April 7, 2019) was an important Mexican politician and diplomat. He served as the Governor of the state of Yucatán. He was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a major political party in Mexico.
Early Life and Education
Víctor Manzanilla Schaffer's father was also a politician in Yucatán. His father helped start the Anti-Reelection Party and was a congressman.
Víctor studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He also earned a master's degree in sociology from The New School for Social Research in New York. Later, he completed a doctorate in law.
Political Career Highlights
Víctor Manzanilla Schaffer held several important roles in the Mexican government. He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies, which is like a part of the country's parliament. He served in this role for two different periods.
He also became the President of the Chamber of Deputies twice. This is a very important leadership position in the legislative branch.
From February 1988 to February 1991, he served as the Governor of Yucatán. He resigned from this position before his term was finished.
Awards and Recognition
Víctor Manzanilla Schaffer received several special awards for his work. One of these was the Medalla al Mérito Legislativo, which recognizes achievements in lawmaking.
He was also given the Knight Commander's Cross of the Grand Cross of Merit. This is a high honor from the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He also received the Jesús Reyes Heroles prize.
