Diwan Bahadur Sir Vembakkam Bhashyam Aiyangar (born January 1844 – died November 18, 1908) was a very important lawyer and judge from India. He made history by becoming the first Indian to serve as the Advocate-General of Madras Province. He also worked as a Judge in the Madras High Court.
Important Roles
Bhashyam Aiyangar held several key positions during his career. He was the Acting Advocate-General of Madras for two periods. The first was from February 1897 to March 1898. The second was from September 1899 to March 1900. He was the first Indian person to ever hold this important job.
In February 1897, Bhashyam Aiyangar was chosen to be a member of the Madras Legislative Council. This council helped make laws for the region. He was chosen again for two more terms in November 1899 and March 1900.
In July 1901, Bhashyam Aiyangar became a Judge of the High Court in Madras. He served in this high position until 1904.
Awards and Recognition
Bhashyam Aiyangar received several special honors for his work. In May 1895, he was made a Companion of the Indian Empire. This was a special award from the British government in India.
He was also made a knight on February 5, 1900. This honor meant he could use "Sir" before his name. The news of his knighthood was first announced in the 1900 New Year Honours list.
A statue of Bhashyam Aiyangar was placed in the Madras High Court campus in 1927. This statue was given by M. S. Nagappa. It stands right outside the Madras Bar Association entrance.
Family Life
Bhashyam Aiyangar had several daughters. One of his daughters married S. Srinivasa Iyengar, who was a famous lawyer and freedom fighter. His granddaughter, Ambujammal, was also an important activist for Indian independence. The actor Utkarsh Ambudkar is also a descendant of Aiyangar.
