Early Life and Education
Visuvalingam Veerasingam was born in 1892. He came from a place called Manipay in the northern part of Ceylon. After finishing his school studies, he went to Ceylon University College. He graduated from there in 1921 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree.
Career as an Educator
Mr. Veerasingam started his career as a teacher. He taught at Manipay Hindu College. In April 1922, he became the principal of the same school. A principal is like the head teacher or leader of a school. He worked there for many years, helping students learn and grow.
Community Work and Politics
After he retired from teaching in 1951, Veerasingam became very involved in community work. He played a big part in the co-operative movement in Jaffna District. A co-operative is a group of people who work together to help each other, often by sharing resources or services.
He was chosen as the first president of the Federation of Co-operative Societies in Jaffna District. He held this important position until he passed away. A public building in Jaffna is named after him, called the Veerasingam Hall. This hall is used for meetings and offices by the co-operative society.
Veerasingam also wanted to help his community through politics. He ran in the 1947 parliamentary election for the Vaddukoddai Electoral District. He ran as an independent candidate, meaning he didn't belong to a specific political party. However, he did not win that election.
But he didn't give up! He ran again in the 1952 election. This time, he won and became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone who represents the people of their area in the country's government.
Recognition and Later Life
For his service and contributions, Visuvalingam Veerasingam was given the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1952. This is an honor given by the British government to people who have done great things. He passed away on December 5, 1964.
