VSS Vintorez facts for kids
The VSS, also called the Vintorez, is a special sniper rifle used by soldiers. It has a built-in silencer, which makes it very quiet when fired. This rifle uses unique 9×39mm bullets that are designed to be quiet and powerful. It was made in the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. The VSS Vintorez is mostly given to special forces, like Spetsnaz units, for secret missions. It can even be taken apart and carried in a special case, making it easy to hide and transport.
How the VSS Vintorez Works
The VSS Vintorez works in a similar way to the AS assault rifle, especially its silencer system. It is a gas-operated rifle, meaning it uses the gas from a fired bullet to load the next one. This rifle can shoot one bullet at a time or many bullets quickly (this is called "select-fire").
Inside the VSS, a part called a "rotating bolt" helps to load and unload the bullets. The gun fires when a "striker" hits the bullet's primer. The safety switch and the part used to load the gun (the charging handle) are similar to those found on Kalashnikov weapons.
Special Features of the VSS
The VSS Vintorez has a unique wooden stock that looks a bit like the one on the SVD rifle. This stock has a soft rubber pad for comfort. You can remove the stock when you need to take the rifle apart for easy carrying and storage. The front part of the rifle, where you hold it, is made from a strong plastic material.
If needed, the VSS can fire in a fully automatic mode, like a machine gun. It can use its original 10-round magazine or larger 20-round magazines from the AS rifle.
