Vahan Hovhannisyan (Armenian: Վահան Հովհաննիսյան) was an important politician from Armenia. He was born on August 16, 1956, and passed away on December 28, 2014. He was a key member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) political party.
Hovhannisyan served as the Vice-President of Armenia's National Assembly from 2007 to 2008. He also ran for president in the 2008 election. People often saw him as a very friendly and approachable politician.

Vahan Hovhannisyan's Early Life
Vahan Hovhannisyan was born in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. He studied history and archaeology at the Moscow State Pedagogical University. He finished his studies there in 1978.
After university, he served in the Soviet Army for two years, from 1978 to 1980. Later, he worked as a research assistant. From 1990 to 1992, he took part in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War.
His Journey in Politics
Hovhannisyan became very involved in the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) party. He was a member of the ARF Central Committee from 1990 to 1992. After that, he joined the ARF Bureau, which is a higher leadership group, from 1992 to 1995.
From 1998 to 1999, he worked as an advisor to Robert Kocharyan, who was the President of Armenia at the time. He also led a special group that dealt with local government issues.
Serving in the National Assembly
Hovhannisyan first became a deputy, or representative, in the National Assembly in 1999. This is like being a member of parliament. He was re-elected two more times, in May 2003 and May 2007.
He served as the Vice-President of the National Assembly from June 12, 2003, to February 22, 2008. This was a very important leadership role in the country's law-making body.
The 2008 Presidential Election
In the presidential election held on February 19, 2008, Hovhannisyan was the candidate for the ARF party. He received 6.2% of all the votes.
Soon after the election, on February 21, he decided to step down from his role as Vice-President of the National Assembly. He did this because he was not happy with how the election was handled. After this, he continued to be a member of the ARF Bureau and a deputy in the National Assembly. Later, he became Armenia's Ambassador to Germany.
Later Life and Passing
Vahan Hovhannisyan passed away on December 28, 2014. He died in Berlin, Germany, due to health problems.
