Vale (Georgian: ვალე) is a town in southwestern Georgia. It is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the city of Akhaltsikhe. Vale is located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. It sits right on the border with Turkey.
As of 2024, about 5,019 people live in Vale. The town is an important border crossing point. This means it's a place where people and goods can cross from Georgia into the Turkish village of Türkgözü. This village is in the Posof district of Turkey.
Vale is built on the right bank of the Potskhovi River. This river flows into the larger Mtkvari. The town is also on the slopes of the Lesser Caucasus mountains. It is quite high up, between 1,000 and 1,200 meters (3,280 to 3,940 feet) above sea level.
Vale's Journey Through Time
Vale was first mentioned as a village way back in the 10th century. That's over 1,000 years ago! It grew a lot during the Soviet era. During this time, it became a major center for mining lignite. Lignite is a type of soft brown coal. It is used as a fuel. Because of this growth, Vale was officially made a town in 1962.
Important Places in Vale
Vale is home to a very old Georgian church. It is called the Church of Theotokos of Vale. The church was first built in the 10th century. It was later rebuilt in the 16th century. It was changed into a "three-nave basilica." This means it has a main central area and two side aisles.
The town also has a large community of Catholic people. They are of both Armenian and Georgian heritage.
