Valencia de Don Juan is a cool town, also known as Coyanza in the Leonese language. It's a municipality located in the province of León, which is part of the Castile and León region in Spain. In 2023, about 5,185 people lived there.
This town has had many names over time! Long ago, during the Roman times, it was called Comeniaca and Castrum Covianca. Later, in the early Middle Ages, it was known as Cives Quoianka, and then Coyanza or Coyança. You can even see "Coyanza" on its current official seal! This name was used until the 13th century.
After that, it was briefly called Valencia de Campos. Finally, it got its current name, Valencia de Don Juan, after its first lord and duke, Infante John of Portugal.
What Languages Are Spoken?
The city council of Coyanza is working to keep the Leonese language alive. They even offer courses to help people learn and use it! This helps preserve the local culture and history.
