Valentyna Rastvorova: A Fencing Star

Valentyna Rastvorova was born in Odessa, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. She grew up to become a top athlete in the sport of fencing. Fencing is a sport where two people fight with swords, but in a safe and controlled way. They wear protective gear and try to touch their opponent with the tip of their sword.

Her Amazing Fencing Career

Her biggest Olympic success came at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Life After Fencing

In 1956, before her biggest Olympic wins, Valentyna graduated from the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism. This shows she was dedicated to understanding sports deeply. After she stopped competing, Valentyna continued to be involved in fencing. She became a coach at her club, Dynamo Moscow, helping new fencers learn the sport.
