Valentinus (rebel) facts for kids
Valentinus was a person from the Roman Empire who lived in the middle of the 300s AD. He died in the year 369. Valentinus was involved in a rebellion in Roman Britain and was stopped after a Roman leader named Count Theodosius arrived there in 369 AD.
Who Was Valentinus?
Valentinus came from a place called Pannonia, which was a Roman province. His brother-in-law, a man named Maximinus, was very close to the Roman emperor at the time, Valentinian I.
Valentinus had done something wrong and was sent away from his home as a punishment. He was sent to live in Britain. This happened around the time of a big problem in Britain called the Great Conspiracy, which was a large uprising against Roman rule.
Valentinus's Plans in Britain
Even though Valentinus was already in Britain during the Great Conspiracy, the historical records don't say he was part of that specific uprising. However, after Count Theodosius arrived in Britain, Valentinus started planning his own new rebellion.
He gathered other people who had also been sent away from their homes. He also tried to convince some of the local Roman soldiers to join his side by offering them money.
Stopping the Rebellion
Valentinus's plans were discovered. He was then handed over to a Roman military leader named Duke Dulcitius. The Romans didn't investigate Valentinus's plot too deeply. They wanted to avoid causing even more trouble and unrest in the province of Britain.
