Valerie Ganz facts for kids
Valerie Ganz (1936–2015) was a talented artist from Wales. She became famous for her paintings that showed the lives of coal miners in South Wales.
Life as an Artist
Valerie Ganz grew up in a place called Mumbles, which is part of Swansea, Wales. She loved art from a young age and studied it in Swansea. After her studies, she worked as a teacher, sharing her knowledge with others. But in 1973, she decided to focus completely on her passion: painting.
Painting the Miners
Valerie became very interested in the history of industries in South Wales, especially the coal mines. She wanted to show what life was like for the miners. To do this, she did something amazing: she spent many days each week underground in 14 different coal mines during the 1980s. While there, she would sketch the miners as they worked. This gave her a unique way to capture their lives and hard work in her art.
Her special paintings were shown to the public at the Glynn Vivian Gallery in Swansea in 1986.
Later Years and Legacy
Valerie Ganz had her last big art show in 2010 at the Attic Gallery, also in Swansea. She was also chosen to be a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, which is a special group for artists in Wales.
Today, you can find 14 of Valerie's paintings in public art collections across the United Kingdom. These include important places like the National Coal Mining Museum for England, the National Library of Wales, and the National Museum of Wales. This means her art will continue to be seen and appreciated by many people for years to come.
Valerie Ganz passed away on September 28, 2015, when she was 79 years old.
