Valery Ilyich Rozhdestvensky (born February 13, 1939 – died August 31, 2011) was a brave Soviet cosmonaut. He was one of the special people who traveled into space.

Valery Rozhdestvensky: A Space Explorer

Valery Rozhdestvensky was an important figure in the history of space travel. He was part of the Soviet space program, which explored space for the Soviet Union.

Early Life and Education

Valery Rozhdestvensky was born in a city called Leningrad (which is now Saint Petersburg) in 1939. He loved to learn and decided to study engineering. Engineering is about designing and building machines and structures. He went to the Higher Military Engineering School of the Soviet Navy in Pushkin.

Working with the Navy

After his studies, Valery joined the Soviet Navy. From 1961 to 1965, he was in charge of a special team. This team worked deep under the sea. They were a deep sea diving unit in the Baltic Sea War Fleet. This job taught him a lot about working in difficult and challenging environments.

Journey to Space

Valery's dream of going to space came true when he was chosen to be a cosmonaut. He joined the cosmonaut team on October 23, 1965. A cosmonaut is a person trained to travel in a spacecraft.

The Soyuz 23 Mission

In 1976, Valery finally flew into space. He was the Flight Engineer on a mission called Soyuz 23. As a Flight Engineer, he was responsible for making sure the spacecraft's systems worked correctly. He helped control the ship and keep the crew safe. The mission lasted for about two days.

Life After Spaceflight

After his exciting journey into space, Valery continued to work with the space program. He worked at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. This center is where new cosmonauts learn everything they need to know about space travel. He helped train others and shared his knowledge.

Retirement and Later Work

Valery Rozhdestvensky retired from his work with the space program on June 24, 1986. After retiring, he worked with a company called Metropolis Industries. He lived a long life, passing away in 2011.
