History
Long ago, before Europeans arrived, the area at the foot of the Vallejo Mountains was home to a village called "Tintoque." This name meant Valley of the Warriors. It was the center of a small group of Cuyuteco Native Americans.
These people were part of a larger group living in the Xalisco region. They mostly grew food in the rich valley fields instead of relying on the sea.
In 1525, a Spanish explorer named Francisco Cortés de Buenaventura arrived. He was the nephew of Hernán Cortés. When he took control of this Pacific coast area, he renamed the village "Valle de Banderas." This new name means Valley of the Flags.
Today, the town of Valle de Banderas is the oldest and most important town in its municipality. It has a church that is 140 years old, showing its long history.
