The vampire ground finch (Geospiza septentrionalis) is a small bird that lives on the Galápagos Islands. It was once thought to be a special type of sharp-beaked ground finch. However, scientists now believe it is its own unique species. This is because of strong evidence from their genes, how they look, and the songs they sing.

About the Vampire Finch

Male vampire finches are mostly black. Female finches are grey with brown stripes. This difference between males and females is common in their bird group. The finches on Wolf Island have a soft, musical song. Those on Darwin Island have a buzzing song. They also make whistling calls on both islands.

What They Eat

This bird is famous for its very unusual diet! When there isn't much other food, the vampire finch sometimes drinks the blood of other birds. They mostly drink from Nazca and blue-footed boobies. They peck at the boobies' skin with their sharp beaks until blood comes out. It's surprising, but the boobies usually don't try to stop them!

Scientists think this behavior might have started when the finches were cleaning tiny bugs (parasites) off the boobies' feathers. The finches also eat eggs. They steal eggs right after they are laid. Then, they roll the eggs into rocks until they break open. They push the eggs with their legs and use their beak to help turn them. Besides blood and eggs, they also eat bird droppings (guano) and leftover fish from other animals.

Vampire finches drink more blood during dry times when seeds and other food are hard to find. When the rainy season starts, they go back to eating a mix of different foods. Like other birds, they also drink nectar from Galápagos prickly pear flowers, especially on Wolf Island. They have these strange eating habits because there isn't much fresh water on their home islands. But their main diet is still seeds and small bugs, just like their relatives.

Protecting the Vampire Finch

The vampire finch is considered a vulnerable species. This means it could be in danger of disappearing. This is because they live in a very small area. Also, new types of plants and animals brought to their islands can harm their habitat.
