Van G. Garrett is an American poet, novelist, teacher, and photographer. He is known for his creative writing and visual art. His poetry has appeared in many well-known literary magazines in the United States. His work has also been published in other countries like Turkey, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Garrett often writes poetry using special structures like haiku or kwansaba. Haiku is a short Japanese poem with three lines.

Early Life and College Years

Van Garrett was born in Wharton, Texas. He studied at Houston Baptist University. In 1999, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there. He studied Mass Media and English.

Garrett received a special writing award in 2002 and 2004. It was called the Callaloo Creative Writing Fellowship. In 2006, he earned a Master of Arts degree. He got this degree from the University of Houston–Victoria. He focused on different subjects working together. Garrett also received a Hurston/Wright Fellowship in 2006. This was at American University.

Travel and Teaching Around the World

In 2008, Van G. Garrett received a scholarship. It was called the Dr. Kwame Nkrumah International Study Scholarship. This allowed him to study in Ghana, Africa. He learned about African American language and philosophy at the University of Ghana.

While in Ghana, he traveled a lot. He taught poetry workshops and read his poems. He also practiced his photography skills. In 2008, his first book of poetry was published.

Garrett was a Book-in-a-Day (BID) Fellow in 2010. He took part in workshops and cultural events in Tuscany, Italy. In 2011, he worked with the Writers In The Schools (WITS) program. He was a writer-in-residence in Latvia. There, he taught creative writing and read his poetry at a White Night festival.

Current Work and Art

Van G. Garrett has led creative writing workshops. He has taught at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He has also taught at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. His visual art has been shown in different places. These include the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Rice University.

Garrett has received a grant from Poets & Writers. He has also been a judge for poetry events. These include the National Poetry Slam and the ARTlines Poetry Competition.

In 2015, Garrett worked with Don Tate. They created a poetry guide for young students. This guide helps teachers in grades K-5. It follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards. In 2017, Garrett's book, 49: Wings and Prayers, won an award. It was named the Best Book of African American Poetry.

Today, Van G. Garrett teaches at the University of Houston. He teaches African American Studies and Literature. He is also a teacher at Lanier Middle School.
