Van Trump Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Pierce County, Washington. It's part of Van Trump Creek, which flows through the stunning Mount Rainier National Park. This amazing waterfall is known for its unique drops and the powerful water that carves its way through the landscape. You can find it a little way downstream from where Falls Creek joins Van Trump Creek.

What Makes Van Trump Falls Special?

Van Trump Falls is a "tiered" waterfall, meaning it drops in several steps or levels. It's about 170 feet (52 meters) tall in total! Imagine a five-story building – that's how high it is. The water flows down a width of about 15 feet (4.6 meters).

How the Water Falls

The falls start with a big splash, dropping about 40 feet (12 meters) straight down. After this first plunge, the water spreads out. It then falls another 80 feet (24 meters) into a narrow, deep canyon. This part of the falls is very powerful.

Once the water flows through the canyon, it has two more drops. These are called "horsetails" because the water looks like a horse's tail as it falls. These final drops add another 50 feet (15 meters) to the waterfall's height.

How Floods Change the Falls

Waterfalls are always changing, especially after big storms. In 2001, large floods significantly changed the lower parts of Van Trump Falls. The powerful water reshaped the rocks and the way the water flows. However, floods in 2003 and 2006 did not change the falls as much. This shows how nature can be both powerful and unpredictable.

Visiting the Falls Safely

Getting close to some parts of Van Trump Falls can be tricky. To see the very top sections, you would need to stand near the edge of the canyon. This spot is about 150 feet (46 meters) above the rushing creek below. Reaching the bottom of the falls can also be challenging. It involves climbing down a slippery rock face. Because of these difficult spots, it's important to be very careful if you visit. Always stay on marked trails and follow safety signs.
