History of Van Wert
How Van Wert Started
Van Wert was first planned out and marked on a map in 1837. This means people decided where streets and buildings would go. The community got its name from Isaac Van Wart, who was a soldier during the American Revolution. In the same year, 1837, a post office opened in Van Wert, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. However, this post office closed down in 1872.
Van Wert as a County Seat
For a period, from 1838 to 1852, Van Wert was an important place because it was the "county seat" for Paulding County. A county seat is like the main town where the government offices for the county are located. But in 1852, a new county called Polk County was created. When this happened, Van Wert became part of the new Polk County. The role of county seat for Paulding County then moved to a different town called Dallas.
Becoming and Un-becoming a Town
In 1870, the Georgia General Assembly, which is like Georgia's state government, officially made Van Wert a town. This meant it had its own local government and rules. However, many years later, in 1995, the law that made Van Wert a town was canceled. So, Van Wert went back to being an unincorporated community, meaning it no longer had its own town government.
