The Vander Veer Botanical Park is a beautiful botanical garden located in Davenport, Iowa. It covers about 33 acres, which is like 25 football fields! Many people believe it was one of the very first botanical parks built west of the Mississippi River. This special park was added to the Davenport Register of Historic Properties on August 4, 1993.

Exploring Vander Veer Park's Past

Vander Veer Park first opened its gates in 1885. The city of Davenport bought the land for $13,000. This land used to be the old Scott County Fairgrounds.

The park was designed to look a bit like New York City’s famous Central Park. When it first opened, it was actually called Central Park.

How the Park Got Its Name

In 1912, the park's name was changed. It was renamed after A.W. Vander Veer. He was the first secretary of the Davenport Park Board of Commissioners.

After World War I, some cool new features were added. These included a conservatory, which is like a big greenhouse. A music pavilion was also built, where people could enjoy concerts. Pretty fountains were added too, making the park even more beautiful.

Who Takes Care of the Park Today?

Today, a group called The Friends of Vander Veer helps take care of the park. They are a nonprofit organization. This means they work to keep the park looking great for everyone to enjoy.
