Davenport Register of Historic Properties facts for kids
This is a list of special old buildings and places in Davenport, Iowa, United States. They are all part of the Davenport Register of Historic Properties.
People in Davenport started working to save old buildings in the mid-1970s. They fixed up several historic places. From 1978 to 1983, a big study looked at the city's neighborhoods, areas, and buildings. This study helped identify many important historical spots. By 1985, many of these places were added to the National Register of Historic Places, which is a list of important historic sites across the country.
In 1992, the city created the Historic Preservation Commission. This group helps protect old buildings and decides which ones get added to the local list. Davenport became a "Certified Local Government," meaning it could help manage state and national preservation programs. This also gave the city some power to control changes or removal of historic buildings. The first four properties were added to the local list in 1992. As of 2016, there are 56 properties on the list. Many of these are also on the National Register of Historic Places, either on their own or as part of a larger historic neighborhood.
