History of the Davenport Bag and Paper Building
This five-story building was built in 1907. It was made for the Davenport Bag & Paper Company. The building uses strong, reinforced concrete blocks. It was one of the first "fireproof" buildings in Davenport. This was important after a huge fire in 1901. That fire destroyed many city blocks.
Building Design and Features
The building shows off the "Chicago-style" of architecture. This style became popular after the Great Chicago Fire. It often features wide windows, like the ones you see here. These windows let in lots of light. A special feature is the revolving door at the main entrance. Revolving doors are quite rare in the Quad Cities area.
What the Company Made
The Davenport Bag & Paper Company made many useful things. They produced paper bags, wrapping paper, and even flour sacks. They used this building for everything. This included making the products and storing them. Other similar factories were in this downtown area too.
Later Owners and Use
By 1940, the Peterson Paper Company moved into the building. They started as the H.A. Morrow Company in 1907. The Peterson family took over the business in 1918. They stayed in the building until 1998. Then, another Davenport company, Great Western Supply, bought them out.
The building was empty for a while. But in 2012, Manisha Baheti and Joe Erenberger bought it. They turned the old factory into 19 modern apartments. This gave the historic building a new life!
