The Dr. Heinrich Matthey House is a special old building in Davenport, Iowa. It's part of the Hamburg Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's recognized as an important historical site. Later, in 1993, the house was also listed on the Davenport Register of Historic Properties.

Who Was Dr. Heinrich Matthey?

This house is connected to Dr. Heinrich Matthey, a well-known doctor in Davenport. He was born in Prussia (which is now part of Germany) on October 20, 1852. He had a twin brother named Carl.

When Heinrich was 21, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1873 with his parents. Three years later, in 1876, his family moved to Davenport. Heinrich first worked with his father, helping to publish a newspaper called the Sternan Banner.

In 1880, Heinrich moved to Sterling, Illinois, where he published another newspaper. After two years, he sold his paper. He then went back to Germany to study medicine. He studied in cities like Leipzig and Würzburg, and he became a doctor in 1887.

His brother Carl, who had also studied medicine in Germany, moved to Davenport and started his own medical practice. When Heinrich finished his studies, he also came back to Davenport. He opened his own doctor's office. In 1889, the two brothers decided to work together and combined their medical practices.

The next year, Heinrich married Hilda Mueller. Her father, Chris Mueller, was a successful lumber businessman. Heinrich and Hilda had two children. Heinrich also served on the local school board for two terms, helping to guide the schools in the area.

What Style is the Matthey House?

The Dr. Heinrich Matthey House is located very close to where Hilda's parents lived. It's also near her three brothers' homes. The house has a mix of different architectural styles, making it unique.

It combines features from the Georgian Revival and Colonial Revival styles. It also has some elements of the Queen Anne style.

  • Georgian Revival features: The house has a rectangular shape. It also has a tall, hipped roof (a roof that slopes on all four sides). You can see a special Palladian window in the dormer (a window that sticks out from the roof). The front of the house is symmetrical, meaning both sides look the same. The main entrance is on the right side, with a porch supported by columns.
  • Queen Anne style elements: On the east side of the house, there's a window bay that sticks out. There's also a small tower on the southeast corner of the house. These details are typical of the Queen Anne style, adding a decorative touch to the building.
