Ivane "Vano" Merabishvili (Georgian: ივანე "ვანო" მერაბიშვილი; born 15 April 1968) is a Georgian politician. He served as the 9th Prime Minister of Georgia from July to October 2012. Before that, he was the Minister of Internal Affairs for many years. He became an important figure in Georgia's government after the 2003 Rose Revolution.

Early Life and Education

Vano Merabishvili was born in the village of Ude in southern Georgia. At that time, Georgia was part of the Soviet Union. He studied at the Georgian Technical University and graduated in 1992. His degree was in mining.

After university, he worked at the Technical University and the Institute of Agriculture of Georgia. Later, he became involved with groups that protected people's rights. He was president of the Association for Protection of Landowners' Rights in 1995. He also helped start the Liberty Institute in 1996. These groups are called non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Merabishvili started his political career in November 1999. He was elected to the Parliament of Georgia. He joined the Union of Citizens of Georgia (UCG) party. This party was led by the President at the time, Eduard Shevardnadze.

Merabishvili was part of a group within the UCG called "reformers." This group wanted more modern and Western-style political changes for Georgia. In 2002, he became the Secretary General of a new opposition party. This party was called the National Movement, led by Mikheil Saakashvili.

He played an active role in the protests that followed the November 2003 parliamentary elections. These protests led to the Rose Revolution, which was a peaceful change in government. President Shevardnadze resigned during this time.

Serving as a Government Minister

After Mikheil Saakashvili became president, Merabishvili took on several important roles. From January to June 2004, he was the National Security Advisor. He also served as the Secretary of the National Security Council.

In June 2004, he became the Minister of State Security. Later, in December 2004, his ministry joined with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Merabishvili was then put in charge of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He held this position for many years, until July 2012.

As the Minister of Internal Affairs, Merabishvili worked on reforming the police. He also focused on stopping organized crime. Many international groups praised his efforts. By late 2008, he was one of the most influential people in the Georgian government.

Becoming Prime Minister

On June 30, 2012, President Saakashvili chose Merabishvili to be the country's Prime Minister. He replaced Nika Gilauri. This happened a few months before the October 2012 parliamentary elections.

Merabishvili said his main goals as Prime Minister would be to create jobs, improve farming, and make healthcare more available. The Parliament of Georgia approved him on July 4, 2012.

His time as Prime Minister was short. The United National Movement party lost most of its seats in the 2012 election. The opposition coalition, led by Bidzina Ivanishvili, won. Merabishvili and his government resigned on October 11, 2012. He continued as acting Prime Minister until Bidzina Ivanishvili took over on October 25, 2012.

After leaving the Prime Minister's office, Merabishvili was elected as the secretary-general of the United National Movement party. He promised to make it a "modern, new type of party."

Later Political Life

In May 2013, Merabishvili was arrested in connection with an investigation. He was later sentenced to prison. He served almost seven years in prison and was released on February 20, 2020.

After his release, Merabishvili stated his intention to return to politics. He wanted to work towards ending the rule of the Georgian Dream party. He planned to meet with different political groups to decide which one to join.

Some political figures welcomed his return, while others were hesitant. He claimed that he received poor medical care while in prison and had to travel to Poland for treatment.

Personal Life

Vano Merabishvili is married to Tamar Salaqaia. They have two sons named Misha and Davit.
