Ivane "Vano" Merabishvili (Georgian: ივანე "ვანო" მერაბიშვილი; born 15 April 1968) is a Georgian politician. He served as the 9th Prime Minister of Georgia from July to October 2012. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was a very important member of the government, especially as Georgia's Minister of Internal Affairs for many years.

Early Life and Education

Vano Merabishvili was born in a village called Ude in southern Georgia. At that time, Georgia was part of the Soviet Union.

He studied at the Georgian Technical University and finished in 1992. He earned a degree in mining. After university, he worked in different roles at the Technical University. He also worked at the Institute of Agriculture of Georgia.

In 1995, he became the president of a group called the Association for Protection of Landowners' Rights. The next year, in 1996, he helped start another group called the Liberty Institute. These groups were known as NGOs, which are organizations that work for public good and are not part of the government.

Start in Politics

Merabishvili began his political career in November 1999. He was elected to the Parliament of Georgia. He joined the party called the Union of Citizens of Georgia (UCG).

He was part of a small but strong group within the UCG. This group was known as "reformers." They wanted to make more changes in Georgia and become closer to Western countries.

In 2002, Merabishvili became a leader in a new opposition party. This party was called the National Movement, led by Mikheil Saakashvili. He was very active in the protests that followed the 2003 parliamentary elections. These protests led to the peaceful Rose Revolution, which changed the government.

Government Roles

After Mikheil Saakashvili became president, Merabishvili took on several important government jobs.

National Security and Interior Minister

From January to June 2004, he was the National Security Advisor. He also served as the Secretary of the National Security Council.

In June 2004, he became the Minister of State Security. Later that year, in December 2004, his ministry joined with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Merabishvili was then put in charge of the new, larger Ministry of Internal Affairs.

As the Minister of Internal Affairs, Merabishvili helped make big changes to the police. He also worked to stop powerful criminal groups. Many international groups praised his efforts.

By late 2008, Merabishvili had become one of the most powerful people in the Georgian government. His ministry took on more responsibilities, like controlling the border police. He also helped manage international aid for Georgians who lost their homes during the 2008 conflict with Russia.

Becoming Prime Minister

On June 30, 2012, President Saakashvili chose Merabishvili to be the country's Prime Minister. He took over from Nika Gilauri. This happened a few months before the parliamentary elections in October 2012.

Merabishvili said his main goals as Prime Minister would be:

  • Creating more jobs for people.
  • Helping agriculture grow.
  • Making healthcare more available to everyone.

The Parliament of Georgia approved him on July 4, 2012.

End of Term

In the 2012 elections, Merabishvili's party lost most of its seats to an opposition group. According to the constitution, Merabishvili and his government resigned on October 11, 2012. He continued to serve as acting prime minister until Bidzina Ivanishvili was approved by the parliament on October 25, 2012.

After leaving the Prime Minister's office, Merabishvili was chosen as the secretary-general of his party, the United National Movement. He promised to make it a "modern, new type of party."

Later Life and Release

In May 2013, Merabishvili was arrested. He was later found guilty of misusing public funds and other charges. He was sentenced to prison.

After serving almost seven years in prison, Vano Merabishvili was released on February 20, 2020. When he was released, he said he planned to return to politics. He wanted to work to end the rule of the Georgian Dream party.

He mentioned that his former political allies were now in different parties. He planned to meet with them to decide which party to join.

Personal Life

Vano Merabishvili is married to Tamar Salaqaia. They have two sons named Misha and Davit.
