Varakļāni is a small town in the Latgale region of Latvia. This area is a historical part of the country. In 2020, about 1,740 people lived in Varakļāni.
History of Varakļāni
The town of Varakļāni was first started in the 18th century. At that time, it was part of the Russian Empire. A famous building called Varakļāni Palace is located right in Varakļāni.
Jewish Community in Varakļāni
For a long time, many Jews lived in Varakļāni. By the end of the 1800s, Jewish people made up about 75% of the town's population.
However, during World War I and the Russian Revolution, many Jewish people left. Some also moved away before World War II began. Sadly, during World War II, the remaining Jewish community in Varakļāni faced terrible events. Many lost their lives in August 1941.
