Vasco Pratolini (born October 19, 1913 – died January 12, 1991) was an Italian writer from the 20th century. He was a very important author. He was even nominated for the famous Nobel Prize in Literature three times!

About Vasco Pratolini

Vasco Pratolini was born in Florence, Italy. Before becoming a writer, he worked many different jobs. He got into writing thanks to meeting another writer, Elio Vittorini. In 1938, he started a magazine called Campo di Marte with Alfonso Gatto. Pratolini's stories often showed his strong beliefs about society. They focused on the everyday lives and feelings of regular working-class people in Florence.

During World War II, Pratolini joined the Italian partisans. These were groups of people who fought against the German occupation of Italy. After the war, he also worked in movies. He helped write the scripts for several films. Some famous movies he worked on include Luchino Visconti's Rocco e i suoi fratelli, Roberto Rossellini's Paisà, and Nanni Loy's Le quattro giornate di Napoli.

In the 1950s and 1960s, two of his novels were made into films. Director Valerio Zurlini turned Le ragazze di San Frediano (1954) and Cronaca familiare (1961) into movies. A Russian composer named Kirill Molchanov even created an opera based on one of Pratolini's anti-fascist stories in 1960.

Some of his most important books are Cronaca familiare (1947), Cronache di poveri amanti (1947), and Metello (1955). Vasco Pratolini passed away in Rome in 1991.
