Veh (В, в) is the third letter you'll find in the Cyrillic alphabet. It makes a sound like the "v" in "van" or "vote".

What is the Cyrillic Letter Veh?

The letter Veh, written as В (uppercase) and в (lowercase), is an important part of the Cyrillic alphabet. This alphabet is used in many languages, like Russian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian. Even though Veh looks a lot like the letter "B" from the Latin alphabet (which English uses), it actually makes a "v" sound.

Where Did Veh Come From?

Veh has a cool history! It comes from the ancient Greek alphabet. Specifically, it's related to the Greek letter beta. Another Cyrillic letter, Beh (Б, б), also came from the Greek beta. Long ago, the letter Veh was called vede.

How is Veh Different from B?

This can be a bit tricky! In the Latin alphabet, "B" makes a "buh" sound, like in "ball". But in Cyrillic, the letter that looks like "B" (Veh, В) makes a "vuh" sound.

To make it even more interesting, the Cyrillic letter that *does* make the "buh" sound is Beh (Б, б). So, remember:

  • В (Veh) sounds like V in English.
  • Б (Beh) sounds like B in English.

This difference is important when you're learning to read or speak languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet!
