Velda Jones-Potter, born in 1957 or 1958, is an American businesswoman and politician. She became the Treasurer of Delaware in 2009. This happened when Jack Markell became governor and appointed her to finish his term. She later ran for the same job in 2010 but did not win. Ms. Jones-Potter also ran for mayor of Wilmington in 2020 and 2024.

Velda Jones-Potter's Early Life and Education
Velda Jones-Potter went to P. S. Dupont High School. She made history at the University of Delaware. She was the first African American woman to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering there. Later, she continued her studies at Indiana University. She earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from that university.
Her Career Before Politics
After finishing her education, Velda Jones-Potter worked for DuPont. She spent 17 years at this large company. She also held an important role at MBNA. There, she was an executive vice president.
Velda Jones-Potter's Political Journey
In 2008, Jack Markell was elected as the governor of Delaware. He chose Velda Jones-Potter to complete his term as the Delaware State Treasurer. This was a very important moment. She became the first African American person to hold a statewide office in Delaware.
Running for State Treasurer
In 2010, Velda Jones-Potter ran for election to keep her position as State Treasurer. She was already holding the job. However, she lost in the Democratic primary election. Chip Flowers won that election with 54 percent of the votes. He then went on to win the general election. He defeated Republican candidate Colin Bonini.
Becoming Wilmington City Treasurer
In 2016, Velda Jones-Potter ran for Wilmington City Treasurer. She won the Democratic primary election. She received 40 percent of the votes. She was then elected without opposition in the general election. By winning this election, she became the first African American woman to serve as the Wilmington City Treasurer. In 2018, The News Journal reported that she had asked for a raise. She also requested raises for other staff in the treasury department.
