History of Venezuela

Early Times and Sugar Production

In the past, the area of Venezuela was known for producing a lot of sugar. There were important sugar mills here, like the Resurrección and La Soledad. These mills were very important for the local economy.

The Fight for Independence

Venezuela played a part in the Cuban War of Independence. Brave Cuban fighters, called Mambises, showed great courage here. They managed to get past a strong defensive line called the Trocha from Júcaro to Morón.

One famous leader, Máximo Gómez, crossed this line on January 6, 1875. Later, when the fight for independence started again, other Mambi chiefs like Simón Reyes were active in this area. Simón Reyes was known as the "Eagle of La Trocha" because of his skills.

Modern Changes and Development

After the independence struggles, sugar production, port activities, and farming continued to be important. New sugar factories, like Stewart and Jagüeyal, were built.

In more recent times, the area saw the passage of a famous group of fighters led by Che Guevara. His column, called "Ciro Redondo," traveled through Venezuela.

Over the last 50 years, Venezuela has changed a lot. The quality of life for its people has greatly improved. Many new schools, family doctor's offices, and hospitals have been built. Old army barracks were even turned into schools. These changes have helped reduce the number of babies who die young. Life in Venezuela is much better now than it was before 1959.

Population and Area

In 2022, the municipality of Venezuela had a population of 25,377 people. The total area of Venezuela is about 716 square kilometers (276 square miles). This means that for every square kilometer, there are about 38 people living there.
